Ayiroothottathu Kavu Nagaraja at Chenkulam, Oyoor, Kottarakkara Taluk, Dt. Kollam
>> In Kollam District, there exist a village known as Chenkulam
near Oyoor, which has a 500 + years old Heritage Home,
Kavu, traditional workship places, traditional kulam and all the
remains of an ancestral rich heritage and the signs of culture.
150 years ago there lived Govindan and his wife Kurumpa with their 16 sons and daughters. Sumathy Amma and Bhavani Amma were the 16th and 15th daughters. Kurumpa Amma was fully engaged in her lifetime in giving birth to their 16 children and they were a very rich family who had several land and other properties
in the region.
in the region.
Kurumba Amma's sisters also settled in nearby locations. One sister settled at Mepparambil Kudumbam at Karingannur near Oyoor which also has hundreds of family members now. All these family members originally belong to the Ayiroorthottam Kudumbam. Our effort is to unite them all.
Kurumpa Amma's eldest's daughter's sons and daughters were senior to the 15th and 16th daughters, Sumathy Amma and Bhavani Amma when they were married. When Sumathy Amma's marriage took place, eldest daugher of Kurumpa Amma had become grand mother.
Currently, all these 16 daughters / sons have contributed thousands of children and some of them are in the fifth and sixth generation. In a rough estimate, there are more than 3000 family members originated from Govindan and Kurumba family living now.
There is an ancestral worship place and Kavu at Ayroorthottam, Chenkulam, near Oyoor in Kollam District and Family members from different places visit the Kavu and offer Pongala and vilakku on different occations. Every year, some form of annual ulsava function is also celebrated..
Now the ancestral heritage home is demolished as it has become difficult to maintain the large heritage nalukettu home made of teakwood. Nearby, a new modern house is constructed by the youghest daughter of Sumathy Amma, Lalitha Amma who stays there with her family.
Next to the ancestral family home lives the current senior most
member of our Kudumba Yogam, Shri Vamadevan N. who retired as Director, Rural Development and his wife. Many of our family members are in respectable positions in India and abroad. Linking together means creation of better interpersonal relations and supporting systems for the whole Kudumba Yogam.
Aim and Objective of Placing this Blog:
